Work performance is increasingly influenced by modern technology. We constantly receive messages and notifications from Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and email. These messages trigger the release of dopamine, the “happiness hormone,” in the body. But afterward, the body starts craving yet another message or another like on that photo.
Our brain is goal-oriented and can only focus on one thing at a time. That’s why we can’t truly multitask!
When we get messages — through our phone or email — we’re pulled out of our task, and it takes a lot of time and energy to get back into a focused work rhythm.
Technology keeps advancing, but here are some tips to stay focused at work:
-
Check your inbox no more than twice a day. This helps you stay focused on the truly important tasks of the day.
-
Put away your personal phone. It seems obvious, but many people don’t do it. This prevents your phone from hijacking your attention.
-
Train your attention. Attention is the new gold. Try to focus on one subject for as long as possible. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Mindfulness apps can be a helpful tool.
