In recent years, yoga studios and yoga teachers have experienced strong growth in membership. The Dutch Association of Yoga Teachers (Vereniging Yogadocenten Nederland) now has 1,100 members, compared to just 400 in 2008.
But what exactly is yoga?
Yoga is all about creating a connection between body and mind. The word comes from the Sanskrit root Yuj, meaning “union” or “connection.”
Today, many people experience a lack of balance between their body and mind. Yoga uses physical exercises to help restore that balance, with the goal of learning to listen to your own body.
You don’t need to be flexible to practice yoga, and it is not performance-oriented. Yoga postures stretch, lengthen, and engage various muscles, improving blood circulation throughout the body. It also reaches the nervous system and deep muscles, which enhances relaxation, recovery, and energy.
Besides physical fitness, yoga can also have a positive effect on mental and emotional wellbeing.
Yoga is suitable for everyone — young and old, with or without complaints, with (mental) disabilities, and even with joint issues.
