Often we try to add things to our lives to make them more enjoyable, but usually it helps more to take something away. Improve your concentration, find more peace and calm.
Nowadays it’s completely normal to be constantly stimulated: listening to a podcast or music on the way home, scrolling your phone while the TV is on in the background, reading emails in the supermarket line. Boredom barely exists anymore. But allowing moments of “nothing” actually improves focus and can make you feel calmer, less anxious, and more productive.
These tips can help you on your way to a less overstimulated brain:
-
Remove the most distracting apps from your phone—think social media, news apps, or games.
-
Consider canceling your TV subscription. It helps prevent aimless watching (including ads) and encourages you to consciously choose meaningful content.
-
Notice how quickly you reach for your phone when there’s a brief pause. Practice doing nothing during those moments instead.
-
Try leaving your phone at home now and then or turning off mobile internet to limit input.
-
Meditation can help you get used to stillness and doing nothing for a while.
